Ki-Ryon Cynn wins back-to-back titles

Cynn and Mark Manson on the 31st

Ki-Ryon Cynn today won the club championship final against Mark Manson 7&5.  Manson got away to a slow start and was two down early in the match.  Cynn managed to extend his lead to 4 holes after 18 holes.  The players started to score some birdies on the next 9 with Manson only 2 down after 26 holes.  However Cynn capitalised on a few mistakes by Manson over the following holes to be 5 up with 7 to play and drove home his advantage with birdies on the 30th and 31st holes.

Cynn became the first player to win successive club championships since Zoran Zorkic's double in 1984-5.

In the B Grade Final ,Rod Kelly was the victor.  Henry Misso maintained a one or two hole lead for most of the day, but surrendered a couple of holes late to go down to Rod Kelly on the last.

In the C Grade,  15 year old Matthew Way is the youngest winner of any grade championship for quite some years.  His match with Brian Fitton was failry even until the second nine when Matthew started to get some of the right direction in his long drives and was able to fire some quite short irons close to the pin on some of the longer holes.  Matthew won 3&2

The last youngster to win our C Grade championship was another Matthew - Matt Guyatt in 1990- who went on to play for Queensland.

Irrigation System upgrade.  An insurance claim for damage to our irrigation systems wiring in a fierce storm earlier this year has been successful.  We are taking the opportunity to upgrade the system and work will commence in the next few weeks.  The new sytem, a Toro product, will enable better management of water and of sprinkler zones.  Several clubs have expressed interest in buying the usable parts of the old control system, sale of which should defray some of the cost.  The greenkeepers, who have been manually watering many parts of the course since the storm will welcome the upgrade too!

Jason Day becomes youngest Qld Champion.  At sixteen years of age, Jason Day became the youngest ever to win the Qld Amateur Championship.  In the final at Oxley Golf Club, Jason went to an early lead and was 6 up after the first 18 holes.  He appeared to be heading for an easy victory when he was 8 up with 10 to play, but his opponent, Justin Maker, from Virginia Golf Club, produced an amazing run of birdies to win 5 of the next 6 holes. The run ended, though, and Jason was still playing steadily and well, and he claimed vitory with a par on the 35th hole.
